Statements by Our Candidates in the 2005 ElectionsLiam Friel, SEA candidate for CitysideLong term funding required for groupsMonday 2nd May 2005 Socialist Environmental Alliance candidate for Cityside, Liam Friel, has called for long-term government funding for community and voluntary groups which, at present, lurch from one funding crisis to the next. Liam Friel was speaking after the SEA was approached by several groups, including the Rainbow Project, whose funding is in question. "Groups like Rainbow, Creggan Parent and Toddler, the Nucleus provide a range of really important services. These are services that the state fails to provide. "Even though it has been known for some time that the EU's Peace money was coming to an end, there is still no strategy to ensure the long-term funding of the community and voluntary sector", says Mr. Friel. "The Council needs to be pro-active on this; it needs to work together with government and other funding bodies to ensure that projects can get beyond this cycle of funding crisis after funding crisis. "This is yet another example of why we need a socialist voice on the City Council", he concluded.
