SEA attacks Ryanair, demands freeze on runway plan

Monday, April 25th 2005

I have been around the Donnybrewer Road area this morning and have reassured local residents that the issue of the Ryanair runway is not a done deal---despite the refusal of the other parties to come out in the open and debate the issue with us.

I have repeated our pledge that at the first meeting of the new council, elected SEA members would propose that the eviction plan be put on hold pending a full and open debate---not just on the council but throughout the city.

We will demand publication of all documents, reports and minutes of meetings relating to this project. We will also want a list of all meetings which have been held between council and airport representatives and representatives of Ryanair.

We are asking for a mandate on May 5th to help make this happen.

I remain suspicious that there is a plan under way here to pour more millions of public money into the airport and then flog it off at a rock bottom price to private individuals who may well have made advance arrangements with Ryanair. If I am wrong about this, who not publish all the facts and prove me wrong?

The fact that some of the parties responsible for this secrecy are meanwhile speechifying about the need for openness and transparency only adds to suspicion.
