Eamonn McCann, SEA candidate for Foyle and for Waterside Rural

Main parties want their bums on seats

Thursday, April 27th 2005

Only a week to go, and not one of the main parties has said how they are going to defeat water charges.

The only thing they are clear about is that they are against a non-payment campaign.

But they won't clarify what their alternative is.

I have repeatedly asked the four main parties whether they will sit on an Executive which privatises water and imposes charges. Without exception, they have run away. If even one of them would pledge not to preside over charges, NIO privatisation plans would be thrown into doubt.

The fact is that all of them want to be back in office as soon as possible. And they won't let the liklihood of people being forced to pay water charges keep their bums off Executive seats.

They'll sell the people out and then claim it was all a done deal by the time they got into office. The time to organise against water charges is now. The SEA will use a mandate to do just that.

The only way to vote against water charges is to vote SEA in Derry and for Socialist Party candidates elsewhere.
