Statements by Our Candidates in the 2005 Elections

David McAuley

SEA candidates will not pay water charges

Wednesday 23rd March 2005

The Socialist Environmental Alliance candidates standing in the local elections will refuse to pay the water charges, if they are introduced as planned.

Candidate for the Waterside ward, Davy McAuley, challenged the other parties to back the non payment campaign.Mr McAuley said,

'We in the SEA believe that by building a non payment campaign that transcends our supposed  communal divisions we can defeat this double tax.I challenge all the other parties to publicly support the non payment campaign or make their positions clear in public debates with the SEA candidates.'

Mr McAuley went on to say,'The erosion of our public services and the back door privatisation of aspects of our hospitals and schools have all been energetically carried out by the main political parties in the North, during their time in the Assembly. Minutes of an Executive meeting referred to in last week's Westminster debate on water charges suggest that the Executive were preparing to bring them in, before the institutions collapsed. Can we now trust them to stop the implementation of Water Charges?

The SEA believe firmly that the water charges can be defeated by building from the bottom up in every working class community in the North of Ireland. From Lincoln Courts to the Bogside, the SEA in this city will do all that it can to give people the confidence to stand together in a non payment campaign to defeat this double tax.'
