"Another world is possible" : International keyboards and characters

Introduction

Our little multilingual exercise introduces one of the web's major endeavours: internationalisation.

The web has a worldwide audience. It therefore needs to support the display of all the languages of the world with their distinct alphabets, symbols, direction of writing and specialised punctuation.

Major efforts have and still are being made to address this need, for instance see http://www.w3.org/International/. Even a cursory look will reveal a sea of complexity. For our purposes we want to avoid this.

Avoiding complexity

We avoid complexity by accepting representations in any of three forms
a) emails containing characters that can be produced using mac or windows keyboard
b) html/xhtml pages containing unicode characters
c) images in png, gif, jpeg or other standard format

Characters that can be produced using mac or windows keyboard

The following are some useful pages retrieved from Google with the terms "keyboard key caps accents acute grave circumflex"
club malu cachu,
Rotinonhsó:ni Keyboards,
Penn State

HTML/Unicode characters

Best explore the relevant w3 documentation, e.g. their FAQ
