Raytheon 9 public meeting on 21st ahead of court appearance Thursday 22nd February

Sunday 18th February 2007

The leader of Northern Ireland's fire-fighters and a man who survived Israeli bombing in Beirut are to speak alongside Eamonn McCann of the Raytheon 9 on an anti-war platform in Derry this week.

Peace activist Caoimhe Butterly will also address the meeting in the Junction in Bishop Street at 7.30 on Wednesday night.

The meeting has been organised by the Derry Anti-War Coalition (DWAC) under the slogan, "Drop the Charges!"

Jim Barbour, NI regional secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, and Beirut man Fares Fares will be backing Ms. Butterly and Mr. McCann in calling for the withdrawal of charges of aggravated burglary against the nine men who occupied the Raytheon plant in Derry last August.

The nine are due to appear at Derry Courthouse on the following day, Thursday, when they may be given a date for their trial under "terrorist" legislation. Ms. Butterly and Mr. Fares will be speaking at a rally outside the courthouse at 9.30 on Thursday morning.

In a statement the DAWC said: "The make-up of the platform shows the breadth of support for the Raytheon 9. We are particularly pleased that one of the North's leading trade unionists, Jim Barbour, will be coming to Derry to show his solidarity. The presence of Mr. Fares testifies to growing interest in the Raytheon 9 case outside Ireland.

"People can see the double standards of making it a criminal offence to occupy a factory in Derry, while the people behind the occupation of Iraq go scot-free. The Raytheon company is currently supplying weapons for use in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine.

"We say that trying to stop war crimes shouldn't be a crime. Already, international figures like Noam Chomsky, Tony Benn and Mark Thomas have called for the charges against the nine to be dropped.

"We urge Derry people to attend the meeting on Wednesday night and the rally on Thursday morning to join in the call for the withdrawal of the charges."
