Organising against water charges in Derry-Londonderry

Tuesday 5th October 2004

Do you want to organise against the water charges in your community? If you do, then you should come to the Junction, Bishop Street this Thursday evening 6th Oct. at 7.30pm.

That is the message from Communities Against the Water Tax which is spearheading the campaign against the water charges across Northern Ireland.  Thursday's event is described as a 'workshop' by local Communities Against the Water Tax spokesperson, Goretti Horgan. She says "it's a workshop, rather than the usual public meeting because it's about local communities getting themselves organised to stop the water charges.

"Since the announcement about how much the charges are going to be, Communities Against the Water Tax has been inundated with requests from groups in every part of the city for information about how best to stop this double tax on water. In particular, many people had thought that those on low incomes, especially pensioners and people living on benefits would be excluded from the charges. The confirmation that everyone will have to pay came as a shock to those working in the most disadvantaged areas of the city", says Ms. Horgan.

"Thursday night's workshop is an opportunity for groups to exchange ideas and get information about how water charges work and how they have been defeated elsewhere. Community workers from every part of the city have already indicated that they will be there.

But, says Ms. Horgan, "you don't have to be a community worker to attend. Everyone who wants to start organising against the water charges should attend."

Among those present will be Frances Dowds, Co-ordinator of the Northern Ireland Anti Poverty Network. The workshop begins at 7.30pm, Thursday 6th Oct in the Junction, Bishop Street.
