Derry to hear about impact of globalisation on Latin America

Saturday 13th November 2004

Saturday afternoon in Sandinos sees an opportunity to hear an eyewitness account of the impact of globalisation on Latin America. Des Boyle recently visited Bolivia with the Latin American Street Children's Organisation. While there, he was struck by the extent to which many of the issues being raised by local people were similar to ones being raised here at home although because poverty levels are already so extreme in Latin America, the impact of privatisation and user charges is far more serious for people in places like Bolivia.

Another big difference is the ferocity of the resistance to the agenda of privatisation in Latin America. While in Bolivia, Des met some of the people who defeated plans to privatise water there through mass mobilisation. At the meeting, Des plans to describe the effects of IMF, WTO and World Bank policies on the poor of Latin America and how resistance to those policies is growing across that Continent.  He will also look at whether there are lessons to be learnt for organising here in Ireland, for example against the water charges.

The meeting, which is being hosted by the Socialist Workers Party, will start in Sandinos at 4.15pm on Sat 13th November.  All are welcome.
