S.E.A. MeetingsBogside meeting against water charges, Monday 7th FebruaryThursday 3rd February Yet another community in the city is getting organised to stop the introduction of water charges. This time it's the Bogside - a meeting is being held in Pilot's Row Community Centre on Monday night, 7th February. The meeting, which begins at 8.00pm plans to "get us all organised now to resist this unfair double tax on water", according to one of the organisers, Oisin Kehoe. Oisin says "there is only one reason separate water charges are being introduced and that is to provide a revenue stream for a privatised water industry. Defeating the charges means defeating privatisation and the best way to do that is to refuse to pay. "If enough of us refuse to pay, then the water companies won't be interested and we can keep water in public hands. There is enough opposition to defeat the double tax on water. "We hope that the meeting will decide to set up a Bogside Community Against the Water Tax group and get a banner together for the citywide demo against the water charges that the Trades Council has called for Sat. 12th Feb. We will ensure that there is lots of time for discussion so people can ask any questions they might have and contribute any ideas about how to organise to stop the charges. Communities Against the Water Tax campaigns in both Protestant and Catholic areas against the privatisation of the Water Service and the related introduction of water charges. It advocates a mass campaign of non-payment which, it says, has worked elsewhere to stop the introduction of such charges.
