S.E.A. MeetingsMcCann in village hall Ryanair debate Monday 2nd MayThursday 28th April, 2005 The Socialist Environmental Alliance candidate for Waterside Rural, Eamonn McCann, is to address a public meeting in Eglinton on Monday night next (May 2nd) on the question of the proposed extension to the City of Derry runway. The SEA says it is inviting supporters as well as opponents of the runway project to join in a debate. The meeting will begin at 8pm in the village's Community Hall. Said Mr. McCann: "As far as I am aware, I am now the only candidate in Waterside Rural opposing the plan. "My first, basic reason for taking up the issue was that it involved families being evicted and their homes demolished. This still seems to me, on its own, a good enough reason to say no the proposal. "At the meeting , I also wish to confront claims that an expanded airport is crucial to this region. "I will deal, too, with the broader social and environmental implications. "And I will question whether Ryanair is a suitable company for an elected council to be chasing after. "The runway project has far broader implications than the council or airport management has been willing to face up to. I invite all who are interested to come along on Monday and join in an overdue and much-needed public debate."
