Meeting to organise Derry against G8 in Scotland July - Central Library on Monday 16th May at 8pm

Saturday 14th May 2005

An open meeting in the Central Library on Monday 16th May at 8pm will bring together people are hoping to travel to Scotland in July to join hundreds of thousands of others demonstrating as the leaders of the world's richest countries gather for the G8 summit.   Monday night's meeting is being organised by a broad group, including young people who are part of Make Poverty History groups in their schools.

One of the meeting's organisers explained "30,000 children in the world die every day from hunger and disease one every three seconds. Applied to the population of Northern Ireland, the equivalent would be 8 local children dying every day from totally preventable causes. They are the main reason we have to protest against the G8.

"The G8 runs the global economy. They are its organising committee. The G8 are the eight most powerful nations in the world. They are not the largest ‹ the G8 excludes China, India and Brazil.

"The key thing is that these people run the world, cause inequality and war. These are the people who killed 100,000 in Iraq. And they've dwarfed every despot in Africa in terms of corruption by ripping off over billion in contracts in Iraq for US corporations in the last year alone.

"You should protest at the G8 if you didn't approve of the war on Iraq, if you didn't like being lied to and if you want to come and "greet" George Bush." Monday night's meeting begins at 8pm and all are welcome.
