Building a Left Alternative: Michael Lavallette of the Respect party, Nerve centre, Monday 6th June 8 pm

Monday 6th June 2005

People across the world were thrilled last month by Respect MP George Galloway's appearance before the US Senate Committee. The Respect MP spoke for millions who have opposed the illegal war and occupation of Iraq.

Now, people in Derry have an opportunity to hear an elected representative of Respect. Preston Councillor, Michael Lavallette is to address a meeting of the Socialist Environmental Alliance in the Nerve Centre on Monday night, 6th June at 8pm. The meeting, entitled "Building a Left Alternative" will also hear from local socialist, Eamonn McCann.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Eamonn McCann said "while Gordon Brown has unlimited money for war, public services particularly in the North of Ireland are starved of funding. Despite Blair getting a bruising at the election, he is continuing with his privatisation agenda and Direct Rule Ministers are pushing ahead with imposing water charges."

Welcoming the NIPSA union conference's vote to back the non-payment campaign against water charges, Mr. McCann said "Former Minister Spellar confirmed hat water charges are designed to provide a "revenue stream" to make Northern Ireland's water attractive to private companies. NIPSA is the first union to agree that refusing to provide profits for the water companies is the only way to stop privatisation and the water charges it needs to be profitable.

"Over the coming weeks and months, socialists will continue to work across the trade union movement to have it follow NIPSA's lead", according to Eamonn McCann. "A mass campaign of non-payment can give working class people in Northern Ireland a real alternative to the stale politics of Orange and Green. We want to see the emergence of a strong voice on the Left, as Respect is providing in England. Anyone who wants to hear more about SEA or Respect politics, is welcome on Monday night in the Nerve Centre, Magazine St."
