Glen Court meeting unanimous

A packed meeting in Glenview Community Centre on Tuesday night last heard calls for a "return to the tactics of the early civil rights movement" to ensure demolition of the Glen Courts flats.

The meeting was hosted by the Glenview Community Association following an approach by the Socialist Environmental Alliance and was addressed by Eamonn McCann of the SEA. Councillors from the SDLP and Sinn Fein also took part.

Speaker after speaker from the flats and surrounding area spoke of the dreadful conditions in the complex. There was a consensus that these should not be tolerated for another six days, still less the six months the Housing Executive have said will be needed before any decision will be taken on demolition.

The meeting unanimously agreed to write to the Housing Executive demanding an immediate decision in principle to demolish the flats and to invite a representative of the Housing Executive to attend a meeting two weeks hence. The meeting was united in the belief that the Housing Executive ought to be in direct discussion with those living in the area.

There was a general acknowledgement that the problems of the Glenview area were part of a wider housing crisis and included social and health problems that were not all housing-related. However, the view was expressed strongly that the atrocious conditions in Glen Court made these problems worse.

The need to ensure adequate compensation for those who had purchased flats in the complex was agreed but there was a unanimous view that all the residents of Glen Court should be immediately offered emergency housing.
