S. E. A. StatementsWhy SEA is standing in European ElectionsThursday 25th March 2004 The Socialist Environmental Alliance is proud to announce Eamonn McCann as its candidate in June's European election. Well-known for his work as a civil and human rights activist, trade unionist and campaigning journalist, Eamonn McCann will present a credible and serious alternative to the parties based on communal politics. Without this SEA intervention, the European election would amount to another "dual referendum" to determine who will champion each community vis-à-vis the other. Eamonn McCann will advance the SEA vision of a Europe that puts the needs of working people before the interests of multinational corporations. Europe is widely seen as irrelevant to everyday life. But many of the major issues that concern ordinary people here are affected for good or ill by EU policies. The proposed introduction of water charges is causing great concern to people on low incomes who will not be able to pay an extra £10 a week. An EU Directive is being used to justify the charges. Many workers have seen their pay and working conditions suffer as a result of contracting-out, Private Finance Initiatives and PPPs. This privatisation-by-stealth, amounting to an onslaught on our public services, is entangled in European directives on freeing market forces. The rise in racist attacks is connected to the "Fortress Europe" project, whereby the EU wants to close its borders to all fleeing injustice. The crackdown across Europe associated with the "War on Terror" has seen a greater attack on civil rights than even the notorious Diplock Courts and Prevention of Terrorism Act. Meanwhile, the main parties locally and Direct Rule ministers blame the EU for unpopular measures, but fail to take advantage of EU guidance and funding which could be used to protect our environment. The SEA is presenting a credible and serious alternative to the pro-privatisation, business-driven, environmentally-damaging agenda accepted, if not openly advocated, by the major local parties and Direct Rule ministers. In the process, we seek to give expression and substance to the alternative to communal division which the SEA represents.
