Huge Response to SEA Campaign on Railways

Monday 29th March 2004

The Socialist Environmental Alliance was on the streets at the weekend with a petition calling for the upgrading of the Belfast-Derry rail link. SEA candidate in June's European election, Eamonn McCann says: "There was an amazing response to our call for a high-speed rail link between the two main cities in Northern Ireland.

"People were queuing to sign the petition. Many were workers who commute daily to Belfast, whose lives would be transformed if they could guarantee that the trip would take no more than an hour and a half. Many had stories of bus or car journeys that take two and a half, even three hours.

"The question of safety - both in terms of the numbers of road deaths and also of damage to the environment caused by our dependence on polluting cars and buses was raised by many of those who wanted to sign the petition", according to Mr. McCann.

"We also had a number of parents who said they felt their children would miss out on an important experience if the train service was not improved. Some said they would not take their children on the train at present because it is so slow, cold and dirty. However, they would enjoy family outings on an upgraded service."

"The question was raised again and again as to why our politicians had not taken more advantage of EU structural funds to upgrade the line between Belfast and Derry and to extend it across the border to Sligo and Galway." Eamonn McCann says: "This is one of the clearest examples of how Europe could impact for the better. But this kind of EU funding will end in the coming years. One of the reasons the SEA is contesting the European elections is to ensure that these kind of issues get raised."
