McCann records his first single!

Thursday 3rd June 2004

Socialist Environmental Alliance candidate in the European elections Eamonn McCann has just launched his first single, entitled "McCann's the Man"!

Mr. McCann - not to be confused with the country and western singer Eamon McCann - has recorded a funky rap-type CD with Strabane singer/songwriter Peter O'Hanlon.

The music and the catchy chorus was written by Peter O'Hanlon, while Mr. McCann's contribution is a rendition of a very apt poem by German artist Bertoldt Brecht, "Praise of Dialectics".. The lyrics of the poem, written in the 1930s, could be about the world in 2004. They are reproduced below.

The CD is already creating a bit of a stir on the club scene and is set to become a 'cult' hit, particularly in gay bars and nightclubs.

**************************************************

Praise of Dialectics
The oppresssors are preparing for a period of a thousand years.
Might insists: As things are, so they shall be remain.
No voice is raised save the voice of the rulers
And in the market-places Exploitation loudly proclaims:
I am only just beginning.

While amongst the oppressed many are now saying:
What we want, will never be.

When the rulers have had their say.
The ruled will have theirs.
Who dares say: never!
On whom does it depend whether oppression remains?
On us.
On whom does it depend whether it is crushed?
Likewise on us.

They who are struck down, let them rise up!
They are who are lost, let them fight!
They who have recognised their own situation, how are they to be stopped?
The vanquished of today are the victors of tomorrow.
And never becomes: even today!

Chorus (by Peter O'Hanlon)
If you want to take a stand, then you know McCann's the man.
If you want to change the plan, then you know McCann's the man,
McCann's the Man.
