S. E. A. StatementsSEA stands up for civil rights of black and gay peopleThursday 29th July 2004 The Socialist Environmental Alliance has called the people responsible for recent attacks on gay and black people in the city "a bunch of sad and screwed up individuals". SEA spokesperson, Goretti Horgan, says "people who feel good about themselves don't go around beating up people they see as different. It is often those who feel most insecure about their own sexuality who attack gay people. The bigots who attack gays or people from ethnic minorities are rarely happy people and seem to want others to suffer like themselves. "We in the SEA think that we must make these bigots see that THEY are the ones who are not welcome in this city. And we need our gay or black brothers and sisters to be clear that they ARE welcome", says Ms. Horgan. "One way of doing this is to get people back on the streets, showing by our numbers that the majority of people in Derry are against bigotry." "This city has a proud tradition of standing up for civil rights. It is clear that we need to be on the streets for civil rights again this time for the civil rights of gay and ethnic minority people. The SEA has approached the gay community and the Trades Council to get together a broad-based group to organise a march and rally against racism and homophobia and for civil rights for all. We hope to be able to announce something more concrete soon."
