S. E. A. StatementsWater ChargesTuesday 14th September 2004 The Socialist Environmental Alliance has reacted angrily to the proposed water charges. Spokesperson CareyAnn Clarke says "these charges will push many working class people across Northern Ireland further into poverty and debt". It is shameful for a Ministers of a government that says it wants to end child poverty to ask lone parents to spend as much as five percent of their benefits on water." "Without doubt", says Ms. Clarke, "our water and sewerage infrastructure needs upgrading. But we've been paying for water for decades and the government has not been using that money to modernise the system. "For example, in England, Margaret Thatcher's government gave the Water Service £6.6bn to upgrade the infrastructure before privatisation." According the to the SEA spokesperson, "the North has had no such "Green Dowry". Water Service trade unions estimate that a similar level of investment on a pro rata basis for the size of population in Northern Ireland would amount to £345million. This would provide most of the money needed for modernisation, without any water charges, just an annual rates increase of less than £30. "Minister Spellar continual asserts that all investment in Northern Ireland has to be paid for in new charges or be taken from the budget for education and health. People are not stupid. We can see that there is an unlimited budget for war and occupation in Iraq. We suggest he asks Gordon Brown for some of that money for our water and sewerage service because there is a huge groundswell of opinion here that says we won't pay this double tax on water. "Over the coming weeks and months, the Socialist Environmental Alliance will be involved in organising meetings in every part of Northern Ireland to resist these unfair and unnecessary charges."
