Call for big turnout at Saturday's water rallies

Thursday 10th February 2005

The Socialist Environmental Alliance has called for the largest possible turnout at the demonstrations against water charges and privatisation in Belfast and Derry on Saturday.

"The vast majority of people both Protestant and Catholic are opposed to this plan", says SEA spokesperson Ryan McKinney".

"If we all stand together we will win. In doing so, not only will we defeat the water charges, but we will show in practical terms what can be achieved when we link arms across the sectarian divide to march forward together. It would point the way to more hopeful possibilities generally. This is why the SEA considers a big turn-out on Saturday will not only boost the water campaign but will also have a potential to advance the political situation generally.

Mr. McKinney insists that "working people from both Catholic and Protestant backgrounds will find themselves plunged deeper into poverty and debt if water charges are introduced. This is one fight where however hard the mainstream parties try to find a sectarian angle it is clear that we sink or swim together.

"A victory on this issue will be a significant factor in tilting the political axis away from community and towards class, to the benefit of us all and the enhancement of the prospect of a future no longer dominated by sectarian hostilities.

"The fight against water charges is part of the broader union effort to defend jobs, union rights and the public sector. Saturday's marches bring together trade unions and community organisations.

"New Labour's privatisation plans would mean the destruction of 700 jobs and of union conditions for the remainder. Northern Ireland has already seen too much privatisation and contracting out of jobs. It is time to take a stand in defence of our public services.

"The marches and rallies in Belfast and Derry on February 12th are just the start. "

Belfast march assembles 12 noon Art College, York Street, marching to City Hall for rally.

Derry march assembles 2pm Waterside Health Centre, marching to Guildhall for rally.
