S. E. A. StatementsS.E.A. urges voter registrationThursday 23rd February 2005 There is now less than a month before the 11 March deadline for voters to register for the local elections on 5 May. SEA spokesperson, Davy McAuley, is concerned that "some people, particularly young people, aren't bothered about registering to vote because they don't think there is anyone to represent their views. They look around and what do they see? There's grid-lock between the Orange and Green parties. Meanwhile, issues to do with poverty, inequality and the state of our public services are ignored or given only lip service. "That is why the Socialist Environmental Alliance has committed itself to standing in the elections, and to put forward as many candidates in as many areas as a small but growing organisation reasonably can", says Mr. McAuley. "We want to give people a real choice on the issues that matter." "We base ourselves neither on Nationalism nor Unionism but on the common interests of working class people. We oppose militarism and paramilitarism. The SEA was set up partly to challenge the bullying of working class communities by paramilitaries , both Catholic and Protestant. "We stand for defence of our public services against privatisation. We are 100 percent commited to the non-payment campaign of Communities Against the Water Tax. We oppose racism and welcome all people from outside who do us the compliment of wanting to live among us. We oppose the neo-liberal agenda which drives wages and conditions at home down while dividing and impoverishing the planet. We stand for defence of the environment against the ravages of big business. "We believe that by standing, we can make a real difference. But we need people who are fed up with the status quo and who see the need for a radical new approach to get registered. The Socialist Environmental Alliance is urging everyone who broadly agrees with our politics to register to vote on 5 May---and then join in the campaign to win votes for a change.
