S. E. A. StatementsNo welcome for airport decisionSunday 24th April 2005 Derry council's favourite airline Ryanair has sealed its reputation for stinginess and greed by banning staff from charging their mobile 'phones at work---on the ground that this is theft of the company's electricity! Workers are also made to pay for their uniforms and meals at work and even for their own training. Shay Cody of the trade union Impact last week described Ryanair as "extremely hostile to the workforceŠa very, very oppressive regime." The International Transport Workers' Federation called on travellers to "think hard about Ryanair's employment practices" before booking tickets. The reason the company won't tolerate trade unions is that they want to go on treating workers like dirt. Last week's revelations about 'phone-charging sums the company's attitude up. This is the outfit which the DUP, Sinn Fein and the SDLP in Derry have been kow-towing to for years. Three of the candidates in Foyle---Willie Hay, Mitchel McLaughlin and Mark Durkan---act as PR agents for Ryanair when it comes to demanding tax-payers' money for a runway improvement. They have been so mesmerised by contact with this billionaire company that they are willing to have people evicted from their homes to meet Ryanair's requirements! The SEA repeats that, on Derry Council, we will move immediately for a freeze on the airport project, pending a full public debate. We will want all relevant documents published and all minutes of meetings between council and airport officials and Ryanair. The people are entitled to know what's being done in their name to boost the profits of this money-mad company.
