Derry trade unionists to meet new Foyle MP Mark Durkan

Wednesday 18th May 2005

A delegation of Derry trade unionists is to meet with new Foyle MP Mark Durkan today (Friday) to press for their concerns to be raised at Westminster.

The delegation, from the local trades council, will be raising issues including the controversial cuts in health and education. The trades council says that the cuts "pose a direct threat to vital services in the north west as well as to the jobs and working conditions of our members in the sector."

The delegation will be led by trades council secretary Liam Gallagher, who said yesterday: "These cuts are only part of the 2.5 percent cuts, or so-called 'efficiency saving,' which have been imposed on all government departments here in the North of Ireland. But there is no parallel in Britain to this across-the-board approach. We will be asking Mr. Durkan to highlight this discrimination against Northern Ireland, to probe the reasons for it and to support the trade union movement in resisting it.

"We will also be asking Mr. Durkan to ensure that Northern Ireland shares in whatever benefits there are to be obtained from  the 'Warwick Agreement.' This was the deal brokered at Warwick last year between union and Labour Party leaders, giving the unions a series of commitments in exchange for their support for Labour in the election. We are very concerned that there seems no guarantee that these commitments---even if they are delivered in Britain---will extend to the North.

"We look forward to discussing these and other matters with Mr. Durkan. Our concerns reflect the interests not only of the trade union movement but of the wider community. We look forward to seeing these concerns raised at Westminster at the same time as we pursue them on the ground."
