S. E. A. StatementsEamonn McCann to speak at G8 Alternatives events in Scotland this weekendMonday 27th June 2005 Derry campaigner Eamonn McCann is to be one of the key-note speakers at the "G8 Alternatives" events in Scotland this coming weekend. As the eight leaders of the main industrial countries prepare to converge on Gleneagles for their annual meeting, the SEA Foyle candidate will be one of eight speakers at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh on Friday night, launching a series of events culminating in a mass protest at Gleneagles on July 6th. The other speakers include Dennis Brutus, a South African poet and former cell-mate of Nelson Mandela, Haidi Giuliana, whose son, Carlo, was shot dead by Italian police during G8 protests in Genoa three years ago, Rose Gentle, mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, now a leading campaigner for the withdrawal of Coalition forces, and Bill Spiers, general secretary of the Scottish TUC. Said Eamonn McCann yesterday: "I was honoured to be asked to speak at the opening rally. There will be a far broader range of campaigners involved in the protests this year. We must welcome the additional forces drawn in by calls from music stars, leading clergymen and others. At the same time, we will make sure that the radical edge of the anti-G8 protests is not lost. "Anti-capitalism and opposition to war will be to the forefront of the G8 Alternative events, running from Friday through to Gleneagles the following Wednesday. We will be pointing out that the same neo-liberal policies being forced by Blair, Brown, Bush etc. on the Third World are being implemented at home, too. "We do not see the G8 leaders as potential allies in the fight against world poverty, but as the main villains of the piece."
