Socialist Environmental Alliance does not welcome ILEX boss

Thursday 25th August 2005

The Socialist Environmental Alliance has said that it "cannot join in the welcome for Peter Coyne's appointment as interim boss of ILEX."

SEA spokesperson, Davey McAuley, says "the appointment of Peter Coyne confirms all our worst fears about what the 'business community' wants from ILEX. As Chief Executive of the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, Coyne 'vision' resulted in huge profits for speculators and property developers.

"The DDDA was supposed to ensure that the local people in Sheriff Street, North Wall, East Wall, Ringsend, Pearse Street and City Quay would benefit through jobs and housing", says the SEA spokesperson. "Instead, under Coyne, very few jobs for locals were created and very little social housing was developed. By contrast, luxury apartment and office blocks and hotels went up while local communities continued to live in poverty."

According to Mr. McAuley, what happened to the working class community in Sheriff Street is probably the most symbolic example of what the Dublin Docklands Development Authority saw as its role. "Sheriff Street is cheek by jowl with the Irish Financial Services Centre, probably the centrepiece of the DDDA's work. But there has been no reduction in levels of poverty for the people of Sheriff St. There are even fewer safe places for their children to play.

"The SEA has been campaigning to have the land in Fort George and Ebrington Barracks used for the good of the overwhelming majority of people in Derry, not the privileged few. The appointment of Peter Coyne, even on an interim basis, proves that ILEX's 'vision' puts profit before people. It's time to scrap ILEX and ensure that the land given to it is used to provide some bit of a peace dividend to the people of Derry."
