Bloody Sunday families attend Iraq peace conference

Monday 12th December 2005

Members of the Bloody Sunday families were given a standing ovation when they attended an international peace conference on Iraq in London at the weekend.

The 3,000 delegates rose to their feet when the chairman drew attention to the three family members arriving at the Royal Horticultural Hall in Westminster. The delegation comprised Alana Burke, who was wounded on Bloody Sunday, Caroline O’Donnell, whose father, Patrick, was wounded in Glenfada Park, and Kay Duddy, sister of Jackie, shot dead in the Rossville Flats car-park.

The family members had travelled to London for the launch on Friday night of the book, 'The Bloody Sunday Inquiry---The Families Speak Out', and had stayed on to take part in the peace conference.

Among the platform party which stood to greet the Derry women were Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a US soldier killed in Iraq who camped outside George Bush’s Texas ranch during his vacation in the summer, Rose Gentle from Glasgow, whose son was killed in Basra, Hannah Ibrahim, of the Iraqi women’s organisation Woman’s Will and Hassan Juma, leader of the Iraqi oil workers’ union.

Also present was a delegation from the Derry Anti-War Coalition. DAWC spokesperson Roderick Cobley said afterwards: 'It was highly appropriate that victims of Bloody Sunday State should join with the British, American and Iraqi delegations to take a stand against State violence and repression. It brought the message home in a very practical and effective way.

'The conference resolved to organise rallies and other activities calling for a end to the occupation in March 18th next. We hope on that day to see big crowds on the streets in Washington, London and Baghdad, as well as other centres around the world. We will be doing our bit in Derry.'
