Black Shamrock campaign to be launched at the War Memorial in Derry at one pm Monday, March 13th

Monday, March 13th 2006

The Black Shamrock campaign will be launched at the War Memorial in the Diamond in Derry at one pm tomorrow (Monday, March 13th).

The Black Shamrock is a mark of commemoration of all those who have died as a result of Irish collaboration in the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

The Black Shamrock mourns the death of Irish neutrality. More than half a million US soldiers have passed through Shannon airport en route to Iraq since the beginning of the war. CIA planes carrying kidnap victims being "rendered" to countries which practice torture have also been allowed to use Shannon as a stop-over.

The Black Shamrock protests against Irish involvement in arms manufacture. Raytheon in Derry comes immediately to mind.

Ten thousand Black Shamrock badges have already been distributed across Ireland. Another 10,000 will be distributed by next Friday, St. Patrick's Day.

The invasion of Iraq was launched on the day after St. Patrick's Day, March 18th, in 2003.

The Black Shamrock campaign is a collective effort by individuals involved in anti-war activity.
