SEA nomination statement for Foyle

Monday 12th February 2007

Speaking after handing in nomination forms (February 12th), Socialist Environmental Alliance Foyle candidate Eamonn McCann said: "I have been involved in radical politics in Derry over a period of 40 years. I believe that this is the election in which the Left can take a seat.

"It's widely assumed that Foyle will return five Nationalists and Willie Hay. The main question is seen as whether the SDLP will hold onto three seats, leaving Sinn Fein with two, or the other way round.

"But there's always been a streak in Derry that's gone against conventional wisdom of this sort. If we hadn't broken the mold of politics in Derry, we'd all still be back in the '50s.

"I'm asking the voters to put me in the Assembly to speak up for all those who are being left out and left behind. I stand for the unity of the discontented, whether Catholic or Protestant. If elected, I will not register at the Assembly as either Nationalist or Unionist, but as 'Other.'

"I reject the idea that there's so many SDLP votes, so many Sinn Fein votes, so many DUP votes and that the only thing that matters is which of these parties can add a few more to their totals. The votes don't belong to parties. They belong to the people. This time, people can use them to make a real difference.

"I ask voters in Foyle who want to move on from the deadlocks and dead ends of the past to give me their number ones. If we can win enough first preferences to stay in the race, we can take a seat on March 7th. "
